The Right Mental Attitude – Thomas Jefferson
Nothing can stop the man
with the right mental attitude
from achieving his goal;
nothing on earth
can help the man
with the wrong mental attitude
So many times in life we hear stories of people who achieve astonishing goals despite their circumstances. People who start businesses on little more than a shoestring and a dream and make that dream come true. The ones who have mental or physical limitations or hurdles to overcome, and yet they do and achieve amazing levels of accomplishments. How do they do it? Like our founding father, Thomas Jefferson, I like to believe it is a matter of the right mental attitude. Nothing stops the winners from their goals. Setbacks happen but when they do, they are looked at as just that; setbacks and not the end. Rather than be stopped by a setback when it occurs, the setback is used as a stepping stone to the next achievement. Learning from the setbacks is the key. This mental attitude is what makes the winners win and the losers, well, not winners.
Does society contribute to people having the wrong mental attitude? Have we come to accept failure and even make excuses for it? If one person can overcome terrible odds and live a successful productive life, then why can’t another person conquer even minor setbacks?
From the homesteader’s perspective, lets say that you lose a potato crop one year. This is real life for us because we have yet to have a successful potato crop. Did we throw in the towel on gardening altogether? Did we decide not to grow potatoes? Nope. Every year, something in our garden succeeds wildly, while most things provide enough for a few meals. We purchase from more successful farmers for our canning and storage. And we go on. Failure is not part of our vision. It’s just not an option to walk away. We have worked too hard to get to this point. There’s no turning back. Look at the winners who press on, after dismal failure, fires, loss through natural disaster, economic failure and refuse to throw in the towel.
Which brings me back to my earlier question. Does society make it too easy for people with the wrong mental attitude to throw in the towel? Something to ponder while you sit a spell.
Until next time, cultivate the right mental attitude.

Thanks for joining me for this week’s Sunday Thoughts
Sunday Thoughts are my posts that are not typical for this site. They came about because I wanted to share a more artistic photo with you and these photos usually bring about some thoughts that need to be shared too. I hope you enjoy this change from our normal posts and homesteading information.
