On a recent trip to Walmart, I spied these rolls of wide burlap ribbon in cute patterns. (like chevrons and polka dots!) Do you ever have one of those moments when a project instantly comes into your mind? This was one of those moments for me. Burlap is one of my favorite things to craft with. I immediately saw cute burlap coasters made from this rolled burlap. I quickly grabbed up four rolls in two colors and patterns. Here’s the very quick project how-to. I made mine with hand stitching and embroidery floss. You could use a sewing machine and even bias tape if you like a less rustic look. For the middle layer I used a single layer of fleece that was on the remnant table.
fleece or felt for the middle layer
Cut your squares of burlap. The size is up to you. I used 5 inch squares.
You will need two squares of burlap per coaster.
One square of fleece or felt slightly smaller than the burlap squares
Layer your burlap, fleece and second burlap squares. Starting in one corner, begin stitching with the embroidery floss. I used the blanket stitch .
Here’s a video with instructions on how to create the blanket stitch.
Continue around all four sides. Weave the ends of the floss under a few stitches to secure the ends.
Voila! You have a cute mug mat or coaster!
