This week we are doing Holiday Candy!
Call me weird but I don’t have a real sweet tooth. I do have a chocolate tooth though. I love good quality chocolate. And salty food. So no surprise that I would be in love with chocolate covered pretzels. A couple of reasons that I love the way I make the treats, I don’t dip the entire pretzel into the chocolate. That is too much for me. I prefer the mixture of sweet and salty. So I dip one half of the pretzel and leave the other half as the clean handle. Yum and no messy fingers. The other reason I love these treats is because they are made from a great tasting chocolate. Combine that with a great tasting pretzel and it’s a win win in the candy world for me.
Start with a bag or two of your favorite pretzels. Mine are Snyders Old Fashioned Sourdough pretzels. I also used an organic mini pretzel too this time. The other necessary ingredient is the delicious chocolate. I use Wilton wafer melts in dark chocolate flavor or milk chocolate flavor. Both are delicious.
Melt the chocolate wafers in a double boiler or use a plastic or glass bowl in your microwave. Be careful not to over heat the chocolate in the microwave. You may have to re-melt the chocolate during the course of making your pretzels. I find I can usually reheat 2 or 3 times before the chocolate starts to get gummy. Have your supplies ready before melting the chocolate. Lay out some wax paper before beginning. Have the sprinkles ready.
Working as quickly as possible, dip the pretzel into the chocolate and lay it on the wax paper. Sprinkle the decorations on immediately. Or you can dip the coated pretzel into the sprinkles and then lay it on the wax paper to cool.
When the pretzels have cooled completely and the chocolate is hardened, it is time to package up the pretzels for gift giving. Here are some ideas for you.
I was able to make all these gifts from one bag of chocolate, one bag of regular size pretzels and one bag of minis. With plenty of goodies left over to keep a tin of pretzels for us.
